May 23 with Midnight and the Germans

Today was mostly flat with little ups and downs all day. That makes it easier to work the up hill muscles then the down hill muscles. I started the day at my campsite at mile 585. Kind of a un remarkable day except that it felt really good to be walking. My pack was about as light as it was going to be and 18.1 miles late I'm looking for a campsite. Up rumbles Midnight. An escapee from a VA pain clinic. He said he woke up one day and told his daughter to get him outta there and he hasn't looked back since. He doesn't have many faltering stories about his treatment. He and I decide on a spot right close to the river he sets his iPod speaker up and starts collecting firewood to country music. A few minutes later a German fellow shows up to camp. Apparently there was some documentary in Germany about the AT and this year there are quite a few Germans on the trail. They all seem to understand English well enough. About a half hour later a man and a woman show up independently. The place is crowded and very animated with stories. Midnight got his name because when he started hiking he used to stay up all night and wait for the wild animals to attack. The woman was Ghost Hiker. Up until now I thought that Trents Grocery was going to be closed on Sundaytomorrow. But ghost hiker said it was going to be open and had proof in AWOLS Guide. My plan is to get up early and have breakfast at Trents after just a short little up hill it should be flat all day and I'll decide how far I can go when I get there.
